Lets talk about sustainability……….

When it comes to floristry as an industry we are ironically not that green. For many years the use of floral foam has been taught and this is still the preferred tool for so many florists. This plastic based product retains water, so that flowers can drink and florists can create installations. There is a huge down side to this product though. The product is made from a combination of carbon black, formaldehyde and phenolic foam, which can cause irritation to eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Perhaps most importantly it is not bio-degradable and inside crumbles into micro-plastics.

There has been a huge shift in the floristry industry in recent years to raise awareness about this product and to get florists to try out different tools.

It all starts at the beginning and that is why, unlike many colleges out there we do not teach with floral foam. We instead choose to use chicken wire, kenzan or pin frogs and moss.

Although these techniques might take longer, it is worth it. If we all do out little bit for the planet surely that is a wonderful thing.

British Growers

At Flourish Sussex Flower School we also work with a number of British growers, so we can reduce our carbon footprint, while supporting other small local businesses.
